Röntgenbesugárzás, also known as X-ray radiation, refers to a form of electromagnetic radiation discovered by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen in 1895. X-rays have wavelengths ranging from about 0.01 to 10 nanometers and are part of the electromagnetic spectrum, situated between ultraviolet radiation and gamma rays.

The primary characteristic of X-ray radiation is its ability to penetrate matter. The degree of penetration depends on the energy of the X-rays and the density and composition of the material they encounter. Denser materials, such as bone, absorb X-rays more effectively than less dense materials like soft tissues, which is the principle behind their use in medical imaging.

In medicine, X-ray imaging is a widely used diagnostic tool. It allows visualization of internal body structures, aiding in the detection of fractures, diseases like pneumonia, and dental issues. However, X-ray radiation is ionizing, meaning it has enough energy to remove electrons from atoms and molecules, which can damage living cells and increase the risk of cancer with prolonged or excessive exposure. Therefore, medical X-ray procedures are carefully controlled to minimize radiation dose to patients and healthcare professionals.

Beyond medical diagnostics, X-rays have applications in various fields, including security screening at airports, industrial inspection for detecting flaws in materials, and scientific research, such as in crystallography for determining the atomic structure of molecules. The generation of X-rays typically involves accelerating electrons to high speeds and then suddenly stopping them, usually by striking a metal target.
