Rödfärg

Rödfärg is a traditional red exterior paint used on wooden houses and outbuildings in Sweden and other Nordic countries. The most famous shade is Faluröd, a deep, warm red whose color is closely associated with rural Scandinavian architecture and historic timber construction.

Historically, rödfärg is a pigment-based paint. The red color comes from iron oxide pigments, traditionally sourced from the Falun region, mixed with a binder such as linseed oil and resins. Modern formulations may use water-based carriers but still emphasize pigment color and breathability. The resulting coating is matte, water-repellent, and allows the wood to breathe, helping to protect against weathering and rot.

Application typically involves preparing a clean, dry wooden surface and applying with a brush. Two coats are common for exterior surfaces, with reapplication every several years depending on climate, exposure, and wear. The color tends to deepen slightly after application and may fade or soften with extended sun exposure, requiring periodic refreshment to maintain the traditional look.

Cultural and architectural significance: rödfärg is an enduring element of Scandinavian built heritage, especially in rural areas where wooden farmhouses, cottages, and barns display the characteristic red façades. While traditional oil-based formulas are still available, modern versions include various oil- and water-based options, including environmentally friendly low-VOC variants. The iconic Faluröd remains a widely recognized symbol of Nordic wooden architecture.
