Ríastrad
Ríastrad is a character in Irish mythology, most notably appearing in the Ulster Cycle. He is the brother of Medb, the Queen of Connacht, and Conchobar mac Nessa, the King of Ulster. Ríastrad is primarily known for his role in the tale of the Táin Bó Cúailnge, the Cattle Raid of Cooley. In this epic, he acts as a messenger and a spy for Queen Medb. He is depicted as a formidable and somewhat fearsome warrior. One of his most memorable actions is his encounter with Cú Chulainn, where he is defeated and brought before Conchobar. Ríastrad is also often described as having a distinctive appearance, sometimes characterized by his strong build and imposing presence. His interactions within the sagas highlight the complex political and familial relationships that drive the narratives of the Ulster Cycle. While not a central protagonist, Ríastrad serves as an important supporting figure, contributing to the unfolding of key events and the portrayal of the warrior culture of ancient Ireland. His presence underscores the importance of kin and loyalty, as well as the constant undercurrent of conflict in the mythological landscape.
