Connacht

Connacht, or Cúige Chonnacht in Irish, is a historic and geographic province of Ireland located in the west of the island. It comprises five counties: Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, and Leitrim. The province features a rugged coastline along the Atlantic and inland landscapes such as Connemara and the Aran Islands. Galway is the largest city in Connacht.

Historically, Connacht was the core of the medieval kingdom of Connacht and is named after the legendary figure Conn of the Hundred Battles. It was ruled by Gaelic dynasties before the Tudor conquest and subsequent incorporation into English administration. The region experienced settlement and administrative changes during the early modern period, which shaped its modern boundaries and governance.

Connacht retains a distinctive Gaelic cultural heritage, with Irish-speaking communities in western Galway and parts of Mayo, along with a strong tradition of music, literature, and sport. The Aran Islands and Connemara are notable cultural landscapes that attract visitors and help preserve traditional practices. The region’s landscape includes uplands, bogs, and extensive coastlines that support outdoor recreation and tourism.

Economically, Connacht has a diversified mix of agriculture, fishing, and tourism, complemented by services and education sectors in urban centers. The province is known for its rural character, coastal beauty, and historic towns. In governance terms, Connacht has no separate provincial government; administration is carried out by five county councils covering Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, and Leitrim.
