Ränikristalle, often translated as silicon crystals, refers to crystalline forms of silicon. Silicon is a chemical element with the symbol Si and atomic number 14. In its pure, crystalline form, silicon is a semiconductor with a distinct atomic lattice structure. This structure is typically the diamond cubic structure, similar to that of diamond.

The properties of crystalline silicon are fundamental to its widespread use. It possesses a moderate band gap, meaning it can conduct electricity under certain conditions, making it ideal for electronic components. This semiconducting nature is manipulated by introducing impurities, a process called doping, to create n-type and p-type silicon. These doped materials are the building blocks of transistors, integrated circuits, and solar cells.

The manufacturing of high-purity crystalline silicon is a complex industrial process. It typically begins with the reduction of silica (silicon dioxide) to metallurgical-grade silicon. This is then further purified through processes like the Siemens process to achieve the electronic-grade purity required for semiconductor applications. The purified silicon is then melted and grown into large single crystals using methods like the Czochralski process. These ingots are subsequently sliced into wafers, which are the substrates for microelectronic fabrication.
