Ruumitükkide, also known as space debris or orbital debris, refers to defunct human-made objects in Earth's orbit that no longer serve a functional purpose. These objects include spent rocket stages, decommissioned satellites, fragments from disintegration, erosion, and collisions, as well as tiny particles from paint flakes or solidified propellant residue. The issue of space debris has grown significantly with the increasing number of satellites and space missions over the past decades, posing risks to operational spacecraft, human spaceflight, and future exploration efforts.

The primary concerns associated with space debris involve collision risks. Even small fragments, traveling at high velocities, can cause significant damage to operational satellites or spacecraft due to their kinetic energy. For instance, a 10-centimeter fragment traveling at 10 kilometers per second can deliver as much energy as a hand grenade explosion. This has led to international efforts to monitor and mitigate the risks posed by orbital debris.

Mitigation strategies include improving satellite design to reduce fragmentation risks, implementing end-of-life disposal procedures such as deorbiting or moving satellites to graveyard orbits, and tracking debris to avoid collisions. Organizations like the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee (IADC) and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) coordinate global efforts to address the problem. Additionally, active debris removal technologies, such as robotic capture systems or laser ablation, are being researched to clean up existing debris.

The problem of space debris highlights the need for sustainable space practices to ensure long-term access to outer space for scientific, commercial, and national security purposes. International cooperation remains essential to developing and implementing effective solutions.
