Ruumiakustika, or room acoustics, is the study of how sound behaves in enclosed spaces. It considers how room volume, geometry, surface materials, and furnishings influence reflection, absorption, scattering, and diffusion, and how these factors affect loudness, timbre, reverberation, and speech intelligibility for listeners and performers.

Key metrics include reverberation time (RT60), the time for sound levels to decay by 60 dB, and signal clarity measures such as C50 and C80. Sabine's and Eyring's equations estimate a room’s overall absorption, with A = sum alpha_i S_i and RT60 ≈ 0.161 V / A for diffuse fields. Lower RT improves speech, higher RT can enrich music.

Design strategies aim to balance reflection and absorption. For speech spaces, moderate absorption and diffusion reduce echoes. For music rooms, longer RT and controlled diffusion may be desirable. Materials range from porous absorbers to reflective panels and diffusers; bass management uses corner traps and tuned panels.

Measurement and modeling rely on impulse responses, swept sine signals, and standards such as ISO 3382 for room acoustic parameters. Tools include measurement microphones, handheld analyzers, and acoustic modeling software to predict outcomes before construction or renovation.

Applications span concert halls, recording studios, control rooms, cinemas, classrooms, and workplace environments. Good ruumiakustika improves intelligibility, listening comfort, and overall sound quality, while poor design can produce flutter echoes, excessive reverberation, or uneven frequency response.
