Runflatteknologiaa, or run-flat technology, refers to a type of tire that allows a vehicle to continue driving for a limited distance at a reduced speed even after suffering a complete loss of air pressure. This technology enhances safety by preventing sudden tire failure and the associated loss of vehicle control, especially at high speeds. It also offers convenience by eliminating the immediate need to stop and change a flat tire.

There are two primary types of run-flat systems. The first is self-supporting run-flat tires, which have reinforced sidewalls that can bear the vehicle's weight even when deflated. These tires are designed to maintain their shape and prevent the rim from contacting the road. The second type is supported run-flat systems, which use a special insert or ring fitted inside the tire and around the rim. This insert provides the necessary support to keep the tire from collapsing when deflated.

Vehicles equipped with run-flat tires typically require a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) to alert the driver to a loss of pressure, as the deflation may not always be noticeable. While run-flat technology offers significant advantages, it can also lead to a firmer ride compared to conventional tires, and replacement costs can be higher. The ability to drive on a deflated tire is limited, and the specific distance and speed depend on the tire's design and the vehicle's load.
