Runecrafting is a skill in the RuneScape series that lets players create magical runes from rune essence or pure essence. The runes are consumed to cast spells, making the skill integral to magic and spellcasting ability. Training Runecrafting emphasizes resource management and efficient travel between runecrafting altars, as each altar crafts a different rune type. The skill has several training methods and is often pursued for self-sufficiency and economic reasons.

Core mechanics: players start with rune essence and use a rune altar corresponding to the desired rune. At the altar, the essence is transformed into runes, granting experience. Access to most altars is gated by talismans that match the altar’s location; in some cases, players may use alternate routes such as the Abyss to reach distant altars. Store the crafted runes in rune pouches to reduce trips.

Progression and methods: early levels focus on basic elemental runes, which are quick to craft and grant steady experience. As levels rise, higher-tier runes become available, requiring more effort but yielding greater experience. Advanced methods, such as teleportation shortcuts and guild access, can improve efficiency and offer training variety.

Economic and gameplay role: runes are used to power most combat and utility spells, making Runecrafting important for self-sufficiency. The skill also influences the in-game economy, as players craft and trade runes with others. Despite being time-intensive, Runecrafting remains a central, enduring aspect of the magic gameplay loop.
