Rozsdásodással

Rozsdásodással, also known as rusting, is a chemical or electrochemical reaction that converts iron and its alloys into iron oxides, typically hydrated iron(III) oxide, in the presence of oxygen and water. It is a form of corrosion that is most commonly associated with iron and steel. The process is driven by the oxidation of iron, which is thermodynamically favorable due to the lower free energy of iron oxides compared to metallic iron.

The formation of rust typically begins with the formation of iron(II) oxide (FeO), which is unstable and further reacts with water to form iron(III) oxide hydroxide (Fe2O3·nH2O), commonly known as rust. This process is accelerated by the presence of acids, which can dissolve the protective oxide layer on the metal surface, exposing fresh iron to corrosion.

Preventive measures against rozsdásodással include the application of protective coatings, such as paint or galvanization, the use of corrosion-resistant alloys, and the maintenance of a dry and clean environment. In industrial settings, cathodic protection is often employed to prevent rozsdásodással by making the metal surface the cathode in an electrochemical cell, thereby inhibiting the oxidation process.
