Rozkladatelé, also known as decomposers, are organisms that break down dead organic material. This process is crucial for nutrient cycling in ecosystems. Without decomposers, dead plants and animals would accumulate, and essential elements like carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus would remain locked away, unavailable for new life.

Common examples of decomposers include bacteria and fungi. Bacteria are microscopic, single-celled organisms found in virtually every environment on Earth. They break down complex organic molecules into simpler substances through various biochemical reactions. Fungi, such as mushrooms and molds, are also highly effective decomposers. Their hyphae, thread-like structures, can penetrate dead organic matter, secreting enzymes that digest it externally before absorbing the nutrients.

Insects, earthworms, and other invertebrates also play a role in decomposition, often by fragmenting larger pieces of organic matter, which increases the surface area available for bacteria and fungi to act upon. This mechanical breakdown is an important preliminary step in the decomposition process.

The activity of decomposers is influenced by environmental factors like temperature, moisture, and oxygen availability. For instance, decomposition rates are generally higher in warm, moist conditions with sufficient oxygen.
