When rounding to an integer, a number x is mapped to the nearest integer; if the fractional part is exactly 0.5, a tie is broken according to a chosen rule. Tie-breaking rules vary. The two common ones are round half away from zero (for example, 2.5 becomes 3 and -2.5 becomes -3) and round toward the even integer, known as banker's rounding (2.5 becomes 2 and -2.5 becomes -2).
