Rotationssensorer, also known as rotary encoders, are electromechanical devices used to detect and measure rotational movement. They convert the angular position of a shaft into electrical signals, enabling electronic systems to track rotation speed, direction, and position. These sensors are crucial components in automation, robotics, and various industrial applications where precise control of moving parts is required.

There are two primary types of rotationssensorer: incremental and absolute. Incremental encoders generate pulses as the shaft rotates, providing information about the change in position. They require a reference point to determine the absolute position. Absolute encoders, on the other hand, provide a unique digital code for each distinct shaft position, meaning they know their exact location even after a power interruption.

The output of a rotationssensor can be in various forms, including quadrature signals for incremental encoders, which allow for direction detection, or parallel or serial data for absolute encoders. These signals are then processed by microcontrollers or dedicated integrated circuits to interpret the rotational data. Applications range from motor control in appliances and vehicles to position feedback in CNC machines and robotic arms, and even in user interfaces like volume knobs. Their reliability and accuracy make them indispensable for modern technological systems.
