Roofers are skilled tradespeople who install, repair, replace, and maintain the roofs of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. They work with a range of materials including asphalt shingles, metal, tile, slate, wood, and membrane systems such as EPDM or TPO.

Typical tasks include assessing roof condition, removing old coverings, installing underlayment and flashing, laying new roofing material, securing fasteners, and applying sealants. They also install ventilation, gutters, and roof penetrations such as chimneys and vents, and perform leak investigations and repairs. They prepare cost estimates and coordinate with other trades.

Most roofers learn through apprenticeship programs or vocational training, combining hands-on work with classroom instruction. Requirements vary by country or region and may include licenses or certifications. Safety training, including fall protection and OSHA standards, is essential. Physical stamina, good balance, and the ability to work at heights are common job prerequisites.

Work settings vary with weather and season. Roofers use ladders, scaffolds, harnesses, helmets, and a variety of hand and power tools. The job carries risks such as falls, heat, burns, and injuries from sharp objects; adherence to safety procedures and proper equipment use is critical.

In many markets, roofers organize into small crews, with opportunities to advance to foreman or supervisor roles or specialize in particular roofing systems. The industry values accuracy in measurements, quality installation, and adherence to building codes and warranty standards.
