Rongiliikuse

Rongiliikuse refers to rail transport in Estonia. The history of rail transport in Estonia dates back to the 19th century, with the first railway line opening in 1870, connecting Tallinn to Paldiski. Over the subsequent decades, a network of railways was established, primarily for freight and passenger transport connecting major cities and industrial centers. The Soviet era saw significant development and integration into the broader Soviet railway system, with a focus on heavy industry and military logistics.

Following Estonia's independence in 1991, the railway system underwent restructuring. The state-owned company Eesti Raudtee (Estonian Railways) was established to manage the infrastructure and operations. The network predominantly uses broad gauge tracks, inherited from the Soviet era, which presents a challenge for seamless integration with European standard gauge railways. However, efforts are underway, notably the Rail Baltic project, to construct a new high-speed standard gauge railway connecting the Baltic states with Poland and the rest of Europe.

Today, Rongiliikuse plays a crucial role in both freight and passenger transportation within Estonia. Eesti Raudtee operates passenger services connecting major cities like Tallinn, Tartu, Pärnu, and Narva, with modern rolling stock being introduced. Freight transport remains a significant part of the business, utilizing the existing broad gauge network for bulk goods and transit cargo. The modernization of the railway infrastructure and the development of new lines are ongoing priorities to enhance efficiency, safety, and connectivity.
