Rollimängude, often translated as role-playing games, are a form of interactive entertainment where participants assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting. Players typically describe their characters' actions and dialogue, and a designated facilitator, often called a game master or dungeon master, describes the world and the outcomes of the players' actions. This collaborative storytelling is the core of the experience.

The earliest forms of rollimängude emerged in the 1970s, with the seminal game Dungeons & Dragons being a key example. These games can be played in various formats. Tabletop rollimängude are the most traditional, involving players gathered around a table with dice, character sheets, and rulebooks. Live-action role-playing (LARP) involves players physically embodying their characters, often in costume and in a designated location. Computer and video games also incorporate role-playing elements, allowing players to control characters within a digital world.
