Robustiohjaus refers to a field within control engineering that focuses on designing control systems that are resilient to uncertainties and disturbances. Unlike traditional control methods that often assume precise models of the system being controlled, robust control explicitly accounts for potential variations in system parameters, unmodeled dynamics, and external noise. The primary goal is to guarantee a certain level of performance and stability even when the system deviates from its nominal behavior.

The development of robust control methods was significantly influenced by advancements in linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) and H-infinity control theory. These mathematical tools allow engineers to systematically analyze and design controllers that minimize the worst-case performance degradation caused by uncertainties. Robust control aims to ensure that a closed-loop system remains stable and performs within acceptable bounds across a range of possible plant variations.

Key concepts in robust control include stability margins, performance bounds, and the use of uncertainty sets to represent possible deviations. Controllers are designed to be "robust" in the sense that they maintain desired properties regardless of which specific plant within the defined uncertainty set is realized. This contrasts with optimal control, which typically seeks the best performance for a single, known system model.
