Ristiinlinkittymiä, often translated as cross-linking, is a chemical process where polymer chains are interconnected by covalent bonds. This creates a three-dimensional network structure, significantly altering the material's properties compared to uncross-linked polymers. The degree of cross-linking, or the number of cross-links per polymer chain, determines the extent of these property changes.

In uncross-linked polymers, polymer chains can slide past each other, leading to properties like flexibility and solubility. When cross-linking occurs, the interconnected chains restrict this movement. This results in increased mechanical strength, rigidity, and thermal stability. Cross-linked polymers are also generally insoluble in solvents, although they may swell.

For instance, vulcanization of rubber, a process involving sulfur, is a classic example of chemical cross-linking that transforms natural rubber into a much more durable and elastic material.

Cross-linked polymers find widespread applications in various industries. They are used in the production of durable plastics, elastomers, adhesives, coatings, and hydrogels. For example, cross-linked polyethylene is used in pipes and insulation due to its improved heat resistance and strength. The ability to control the degree of cross-linking allows for tailoring material properties for specific uses, making it a versatile modification technique in polymer science.
