Riskiensaldot is a concept used in risk management to describe the aggregated balance of risk exposures within an organization, project, or portfolio after accounting for controls and mitigations. The term combines the Finnish words riski (risk) and saldo (balance) and is often encountered in Nordic risk discussions, though it is not part of a single formal international standard.

In practice, riskiensaldot is calculated by estimating a probability and an impact for identified risks, deriving a residual risk score for each risk (residual risk = probability × impact), and then aggregating these residuals across all risks. The aggregation may apply a control effectiveness factor or mitigation credits, and results can be expressed in normalized risk units or monetary terms. Some approaches produce a per-category or per-project vector of risk balances in addition to a single overall total.

The main purpose of riskiensaldot is to provide a high-level snapshot of an organization’s risk posture, supporting strategic decision-making, governance reporting, and prioritization of mitigation actions. It can facilitate comparisons over time or between units, and help allocate resources to areas with higher residual risk.

Limitations include dependence on subjective judgments for probability and impact, sensitivity to scaling and aggregation methods, and the risk that a single number obscures important details about risk distribution. Thus, riskiensaldot should complement, not replace, detailed risk assessments and risk registers, ensuring a balanced view of both the total and the distribution of risk.
