Retroreflektivitetsnivå, often abbreviated as RL, is a measure of how effectively a surface reflects light back towards its source. This property is particularly important for materials designed to be seen in low-light conditions, such as road signs, traffic markers, and safety clothing. A high retroreflektivitetsnivå means that a significant portion of the incident light is reflected directly back to the observer, making the object appear brighter than if it were simply diffusely reflecting light in all directions.

The measurement of retroreflektivitetsnivå is typically expressed in candelas per lux per square meter (cd/lx/m²). This unit quantifies the intensity of the reflected light per unit area of the retroreflector, relative to the illuminance it receives. Different applications have specific requirements for retroreflektivitetsnivå to ensure adequate visibility and safety. For example, regulatory standards for traffic signs dictate minimum RL values based on factors like the speed limit of the road and the expected viewing distances.

Retroreflective materials achieve this effect through various mechanisms. Common methods include the use of small glass beads embedded in a binder, or the construction of cubical corner reflectors. These structures are designed to precisely redirect incoming light rays back along the path from which they originated, regardless of the angle of incidence within a certain range.
