Retikkeliset

Retikkeliset is a Finnish term referring to a specific type of lacemaking. It is a bobbin lace technique characterized by its intricate, open, and often geometric patterns. The name itself is derived from the Finnish word "verkko," meaning net or mesh, which accurately describes the characteristic airy quality of the finished lace.

The creation of retikkeliset involves the manipulation of numerous bobbins, typically made of wood, which are wound with thread. These bobbins are twisted and crossed over each other on a pillow, following a specific pattern or diagram. Unlike needle lace, which is built up stitch by stitch with a needle, bobbin lace relies on the interlacing of threads from the bobbins to form the design.

Retikkeliset often features repeating motifs, such as diamonds, squares, and floral elements, arranged in a symmetrical or radial fashion. The openwork nature of the lace is achieved through deliberate gaps and holes incorporated into the pattern.
