Restriktsoonid, also known as restriction enzymes, are a class of enzymes that recognize and cleave specific DNA sequences. They are widely used in molecular biology and genetics for various applications, including DNA cloning, genetic engineering, and gene editing. Restriction enzymes are produced by bacteria as a defense mechanism against foreign DNA, such as that of viruses. They typically recognize short, specific sequences of nucleotides, often palindromic, and cleave the DNA at or near these sites.

The most common restriction enzymes are type II enzymes, which cut DNA at specific sites within the recognition sequence. The enzyme cuts the DNA between the G and A nucleotides, creating "sticky ends" that can be used for ligation.

In genetic engineering, restriction enzymes are used to cut DNA at specific sites, allowing scientists to insert, delete, or modify genes. They are also used in DNA cloning to create recombinant DNA molecules. In gene editing, restriction enzymes can be used to introduce double-strand breaks in the DNA, which can then be repaired by the cell's own machinery or by homologous recombination.
