Restandardization

Restandardization is the process of reestablishing a standard after it has been revised, abandoned, or superseded by newer practices. It involves revisiting the characteristics, scope, and use of an existing standard with the aim of restoring coherence and interoperability in a system of products, services, data, or procedures.

It is commonly discussed in fields that rely on shared specifications such as manufacturing, information technology, metrology, and regulation. It can apply to technical standards, measurement standards, terminology and data schemas, as well as regulatory or administrative policies that affect compliance and conformity assessment. Restandardization may occur at the international, national, or organizational level.

Processes typically include assessing current drift or obsolescence, gathering stakeholder input, convening a consensus-building or vote, validating through testing or piloting, and publishing a revised document with a transition plan. The goal is to achieve compatibility with existing assets while incorporating improvements or new capabilities.

Benefits can include improved interoperability, market confidence, and clearer compliance expectations. Potential drawbacks include transition costs, the risk of stifling innovation if changes are too rigid, and divergence if multiple bodies pursue differing restandardizations. Effective governance, transparent processes, and clear versioning help mitigate these risks.
