Resourceschaarste, often translated as resource scarcity, refers to the fundamental economic problem of having seemingly unlimited human wants and needs in a world of limited resources. It is the gap between what people want and what is available. This scarcity applies to a wide range of resources, including natural resources like water, oil, and minerals, as well as human resources like labor and time, and capital resources like machinery and technology.

The concept of scarcity is a cornerstone of economics. Because resources are finite, individuals, businesses, and governments must make choices about how to allocate them. These choices involve trade-offs; for example, using more water for irrigation means less water is available for other uses. This necessitates decisions about production, distribution, and consumption.

Scarcity can be absolute, meaning a resource is simply not available in sufficient quantities to meet demand, or it can be relative, where a resource is scarce in a particular place or time, or in relation to other resources. Technological advancements and innovation can sometimes alleviate scarcity by finding substitutes, increasing efficiency, or discovering new resources, but they do not eliminate the fundamental problem. The management of scarcity drives economic activity and policy, influencing everything from market prices to international relations.
