Resonanssiilmiöstä, commonly known as resonance, is a phenomenon that occurs when an external force drives a system to oscillate at a frequency that matches one of the system's natural frequencies of vibration. This matching of frequencies leads to a significant increase in the amplitude of the oscillations. The effect is observed across many branches of physics and engineering, including mechanical systems, electrical circuits, and even in light and sound waves.

In mechanical systems, resonance can be seen in structures like bridges or musical instruments. If a bridge is subjected to vibrations at its natural frequency, such as from wind or marching soldiers, the oscillations can amplify to dangerous levels, potentially leading to structural failure. Similarly, a guitar string vibrates with maximum amplitude when plucked at its resonant frequency, producing a clear musical note.

In electrical circuits, resonance occurs in circuits containing both inductance and capacitance. When the driving frequency matches the circuit's resonant frequency, the impedance of the circuit is at a minimum or maximum depending on the configuration, allowing for large currents or voltages to build up. This principle is fundamental to tuning radios and other communication devices, where specific frequencies are selected for reception.

The phenomenon of resonance is characterized by the transfer of energy into the oscillating system at an efficient rate when the driving frequency aligns with a natural frequency. This efficiency results in the amplified response. Understanding and controlling resonance is crucial in designing stable and functional systems, as it can be either a desirable effect to be maximized or an undesirable one to be avoided.
