Reservoirs can be natural basins that accumulate rainfall and runoff or artificial vessels created by building dams or other barriers. An artificial reservoir typically consists of a dam, a reservoir body, spillways to pass excess water, and intake or outlet structures that regulate release.

Notable reservoirs include large artificial reservoirs such as the Hoover Dam's Lake Mead, China's Three Gorges Reservoir, and Africa's Lake Kariba, as well as expansive natural basins that function as regional water stores.
