Reptors

Reptors are a clade of lizards described in field guides for the fictional continent of Valoria. They range from small to medium size and inhabit diverse environments, including arid scrublands, woodlands, and forest clearings. The name Reptor is derived from Latin and reflects their creeping locomotion.

Most Reptors have slender bodies, elongated tails, and well-developed limbs. Dorsal scales are commonly granular, though some genera have keeled scales. Tail autotomy is widespread, allowing individuals to shed the tail to escape predators. Camouflage varies by habitat, with colors from sandy browns to greens and patterns that mimic leaf litter. Arboreal species may have extended toes or fringe scales for climbing.

Reptors are primarily insectivorous, with some omnivorous species consuming fruits or small vertebrates. They employ diverse foraging strategies, from active pursuit to ambush. Most species are diurnal; some are crepuscular. Territorial displays and visual signaling are common in courtship and defense.

Reptors reproduce mainly by laying eggs, with clutch sizes of two to eight. Incubation depends on temperature and humidity. Hatchlings are independent after a brief juvenile period; parental care is rare.

Taxonomically, Reptors form a broad clade within Squamata, comprising multiple genera placed into regional families. The fossil record extends to the mid-Cretaceous in Valorian deposits, indicating long-standing diversification. Today, habitat loss and invasive predators threaten several species, prompting regional conservation measures.
