Repressurize

Repressurize is the process of restoring the pressure in a sealed system after a period of depressurization or low pressure. It is used to return normal operating conditions, sustain safe operation, and prevent damage to equipment or personnel. It is common in aerospace, civil aviation, and industrial processes where sealed environments must be maintained.

Methods and equipment: Repressurization is usually accomplished with mechanical compressors or pumps that introduce gas (air or other working gas) into the system; pressure regulators, relief valves, and control systems manage the rate and final pressure. In some systems, inert gas or specific gas mixes are used to avoid contamination or fire/explosive hazards.

Contexts: Aircraft cabin re-pressurization after decompression; spacecraft and submarines; hyperbaric medical chambers; vacuum chambers in laboratories and manufacturing; gas pipelines and process plants where pressure has dropped due to leaks or valve operations.

Procedure: first identify cause and ensure safety; isolate affected area; purge contaminants if needed; gradually reintroduce gas and monitor pressure using sensors; verify that target pressure is reached and stable; perform leak checks and document the operation. Follow relevant procedures and standards to avoid sudden pressure changes that could injure personnel or damage equipment.

Safety and considerations: improper repressurization can cause rapid decompression, over-pressurization, or gas hazards. Systems may require staged pressurization, controlled descent in rate, and redundant safety valves. Materials and seals must be compatible with the introduced gas, and monitoring equipment should be calibrated regularly.
