Reperfusionsbehandling refers to medical treatments aimed at restoring blood flow to an organ or tissue that has been deprived of oxygen due to a blockage. This is crucial in conditions like myocardial infarction (heart attack) and ischemic stroke, where prompt restoration of blood flow can significantly limit or reverse tissue damage. The primary goal is to prevent or minimize permanent injury to the affected area.

The specific reperfusion strategy depends on the location and cause of the blockage. In cases of heart attack, common methods include percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), also known as angioplasty, where a catheter is used to open the blocked artery, often with the placement of a stent. Another approach is fibrinolysis, or thrombolysis, which involves administering clot-dissolving medications intravenously to break down the obstruction. For ischemic stroke, similar treatments are employed, including intravenous thrombolysis with drugs like alteplase, or mechanical thrombectomy, where a device is inserted to physically remove the blood clot.

The success of reperfusion therapy is highly time-sensitive. The sooner blood flow is restored, the better the chances of a positive outcome and reduced long-term disability. Therefore, prompt recognition of symptoms and rapid transport to a medical facility capable of providing these treatments are vital. Complications can occur, including bleeding at the site of intervention or the possibility of reperfusion injury, which is damage that occurs when blood flow is restored. Nevertheless, reperfusion therapy remains a cornerstone of managing acute ischemic events.
