Reparace

In English, the related concept is usually expressed as reparations, while reparace can appear in formal or legal discussions in Czech and some regional contexts.

In everyday language, reparace refers to the act of repairing or fixing something that is broken or malfunctioning. This includes mechanical repairs to cars, electronics, appliances, and infrastructure. The process typically involves diagnosing the problem, replacing worn or damaged parts, making adjustments, testing the repaired object, and returning it to service. Services are provided by independent workshops, authorized dealers, or specialized technicians, with costs and warranties varying by item and jurisdiction.

In historical and international contexts, reparace or reparations denotes compensation or restitution required by one state or authority for damages caused by its actions, often following conflict or injustice. Reparations can take the form of monetary payments, transfer of assets, delivery of goods or services, or other commitments intended to repair losses suffered by victims or allied states. They have played prominent roles in postwar settlements, peace treaties, and transitional justice processes, but their scope, fairness, and effectiveness are frequently debated. Contemporary discussions address reparations related to colonialism, genocide, environmental damage, and systematic human rights abuses, exploring criteria, implementation, and impact.

Linguistic note: in Czech, reparace is distinct from oprava, which more commonly means ordinary repair. The English term reparations corresponds to reparace in formal legal or policy contexts and should be distinguished from routine maintenance.
