Rengasjäykkyys is a Finnish term that translates to "ring stiffness" or "hoop stiffness" in English. It refers to the ability of a hollow cylindrical structure, such as a pipe or a ring, to resist deformation under external forces. This property is crucial in engineering applications where these structures are subjected to pressure, bending, or axial loads.

The ring stiffness is determined by the material properties of the structure, specifically its modulus of elasticity, and its geometric dimensions, particularly the wall thickness and the radius of the ring. A higher modulus of elasticity and a thicker wall generally lead to greater ring stiffness. Conversely, a larger radius can decrease stiffness for the same wall thickness and material.
