The remastering process typically involves accessing original masters or high-quality archival elements, then applying restoration techniques to reduce noise, correct degradation, and adjust balance, equalization, and dynamic range. In audio, engineers may clean up hiss, clicks, or hissy artifacts and repackage the material for current playback systems. In film or video, remastering can include high-resolution scanning, color correction, dust and scratch removal, and digital stabilization, often with mastering tailored for Blu-ray, streaming, or theatrical rereleases. In gaming and multimedia, remasters may update textures, lighting, or interfaces while preserving core gameplay and story.

Remasteret releases are common for older music albums, classic films, and older video games, facilitating access for new audiences and formats without creating new content. Critics sometimes debate remasters for potentially altering the original sound or feel, particularly when aggressive compression or altered tonal balance is used.
