Reisestatistikk refers to the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data on the travel of people for leisure, business, or other purposes, within and across borders. It distinguishes inbound tourism (visitors to a country), outbound tourism (residents traveling abroad), and domestic tourism (residents traveling within their country). Key attributes include trip purpose, duration, transport mode, and destination.

Data are produced by national statistical authorities, tourism agencies, and international organizations. Common sources include household travel surveys, accommodation statistics, border and airport records, and payment data. International comparability is supported by standards from organizations such as UNWTO and Eurostat; many countries publish indicators in line with these frameworks.

Core metrics include the number of arrivals and departures, overnight stays, length of stay, tourism expenditure, occupancy rates, traveler demographics, and modes of transport; for inbound and outbound tourism, origin-destination matrices are often used.

Uses include policymaking, infrastructure planning, regional development, and tourism marketing. Reisestatistikk informs economic impact analyses, sustainability assessments, and resilience planning for shocks such as pandemics or economic downturns.

Challenges include definitional differences, data timeliness, sampling error, privacy issues, and inconsistent methods across sources. Maintaining comparability requires standardized classifications and coordinated data sharing.
