Referentiestoffen

Referentiestoffen, often translated as reference materials, are substances with well-characterized properties used as standards in measurement science. They support the calibration of instruments, validation of analytical methods, and the comparability of results across laboratories. In practice, referentiestoffen are selected to resemble the samples being analyzed and to cover the measurement range of interest.

Quality and traceability are central. Each referentiestoff carries a certificate of analysis that states the assigned values, uncertainty, and traceability to SI units. Producers perform tests on multiple units (homogeneity) and over time (stability) to ensure reliability. For some applications, commutability—demonstrating that the material behaves like real samples in the assay—is also required.

Classification includes primary reference materials (with certified values and direct SI traceability), secondary reference materials, and working standards used for routine calibration. Reference materials may be certified (Certified Reference Materials) or non-certified but well characterized. Production follows international standards and quality management practices; major organizations include national metrology institutes (for example, NIST, PTB) and specialized suppliers. Standards and terminology are governed by ISO guides (ISO Guide 30-35) and ISO 17034 (General requirements for the competence of reference material producers).

Common applications span clinical chemistry, environmental monitoring, food safety, pharmaceuticals, and forensic science. In each field, referentiestoffen provide a basis for calibration curves, method validation, quality control, and interlaboratory comparisons. Proper storage, handling, and documentation are essential to maintain their integrity.
