Redoksskift

Redoksskift, sometimes written redoks-skift, is a term used to describe a shift in the oxidation–reduction state of a chemical system caused by electron transfer. It encompasses changes in the oxidation states of participating species and can occur in solution, solid-state materials, or biological contexts. In English-language chemical literature, the term redox shift is more common, but redoksskift appears in some Nordic scientific texts.

Mechanisms and drivers: Redoksskift is driven by electron transfer between redox couples with defined potentials. It can result from reduction of oxidized species or oxidation of reduced forms and may be influenced by pH, ligands, metal ions, or biological enzymes. Proton-coupled electron transfer and the involvement of redox mediators can couple redox changes to other chemical or physical processes, shaping the overall outcome and kinetics of the shift.

Measurement and indicators: Redox potentials are quantified by electrochemical methods such as potentiometry and cyclic voltammetry. The Nernst equation relates potentials to the concentrations of redox-active species. Spectroscopic or colorimetric indicators can monitor changes in oxidation state, while in situ techniques may track alterations in electronic structure or coordination environment during the shift.

Contexts and applications: Redoksskift concepts are encountered in electrochemistry, corrosion science, and energy storage, including batteries and supercapacitors. In biology, redox shifts are central to respiratory chains, photosynthesis, and redox signaling that regulates metabolism and responses to oxidative stress.

Examples and limitations: Common examples include the Fe3+/Fe2+ redox couple in coordination chemistry and iron‑sulfur clusters in biological electron transport. As a general concept, redoksskift describes directional changes in redox state rather than a single mechanism; accurate interpretation relies on measured potentials, reaction kinetics, and stoichiometry.
