Receptief

Receptief is a Dutch adjective describing the capacity to receive or understand stimuli, information, or experiences. The term derives from Latin receptivus and passes through French as réceptif before entering Dutch usage. In English, the cognate is receptive. As a general descriptor, receptief can apply to sensory processing, cognitive understanding, or attitudes toward new input.

In linguistics and education, receptieve taalvaardigheid (receptive language ability) refers to the understanding aspect of language, including listening and reading comprehension. This is typically contrasted with expressieve or productieve taalvaardigheid, which covers speaking and writing. In second language learning, emphasis on developing receptive skills often precedes or supports productive language development.

In clinical contexts, receptief can relate to language disorders focused on comprehension. Receptive aphasia, for example, denotes impaired understanding of language while production may be relatively preserved. Receptieve woorden (receptive vocabulary) describe the set of words a person understands when heard or read, as distinct from words they can actively use.

Beyond clinical and educational use, receptiviteit also denotes a general openness to experiences, ideas, or stimuli. A high level of receptivity can indicate attentiveness and responsiveness, while low receptivity may reflect selective attention or rigidity. The concept is typically viewed as both a trait and a skill that can be cultivated through exposure, training, and supportive contexts.
