Realisurus

Realisurus is a genus of small dasyurid marsupials native to Australia. They are members of the family Dasyuridae and are closely related to other small marsupials such as the Dunnart. There are several species within the genus, which are characterized by their relatively small size and burrowing habits.

One of the most distinctive features of Realisurus is its elongated body shape, which allows it to easily fit into underground burrows. Their eyes are relatively small compared to their total body size, suggesting that they are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular animals. Their ears are also small and rounded.

Realisurus are carnivorous marsupials, feeding on small insects, worms, and other invertebrates. They are often found in areas with high soil quality and adequate cover for burrowing. As burrowers, the Realisurus teeth have been modified to efficiently capture and digest the animals they hunt.

The Realisurus species are found primarily in central Australia, including sampling locations in Northern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia. Their habitats vary, but are often in areas with good quality soil for digging burrows.

Realisurus species are generally solitary and come together during the breeding period. They demonstrate a unique scent marking pattern that can potentially segregate various animal species from neighboring dens.
