Realisationsvinster refers to profits realized from the sale or disposition of an asset. In Swedish usage, the term corresponds to the English “realized gains” and is used in finance and tax discussions. Realised gains commonly arise from selling securities, such as stocks or bonds, as well as from real estate or a business stake. The gain is realized at the moment of disposal, converting an asset with fluctuating value into a concrete cash profit; unrealised gains remain only as paper gains while the asset is held.

Calculation and components: Realised gain equals the sale price minus the asset's cost basis, including allowable commissions and other directly attributable costs. If the sale price exceeds the cost basis, the result is a realised gain; if lower, a realised loss. Gains may be netted against losses for tax reporting, depending on local rules and allowable offsets.

Taxation and reporting: In many jurisdictions, realised gains are taxable as capital gains or ordinary income, with rates varying by asset class and holding period. Some systems offer preferential treatment for long-term holdings. Tax returns typically require reporting of realized gains (and losses), and investors may employ strategies such as tax-loss harvesting to manage liability.
