Reaktionsudbyttet, or reaction yield in English, is a fundamental concept in chemistry that quantifies the efficiency of a chemical reaction. It is defined as the ratio of the amount of product actually obtained in a reaction to the theoretical maximum amount that could be produced, expressed as a percentage. The theoretical yield is calculated based on the stoichiometry of the balanced chemical equation, assuming the reaction goes to completion with no losses.

There are two main types of reaction yield: the actual yield and the theoretical yield. The actual yield is the experimentally measured amount of product. The theoretical yield is the maximum possible amount of product that can be formed from the given amounts of reactants. The percentage yield is then calculated as (actual yield / theoretical yield) * 100%.

Several factors can cause the actual yield to be less than the theoretical yield. These include incomplete reactions, where the reaction does not go to completion. Side reactions can also occur, producing unwanted byproducts and consuming reactants that would otherwise form the desired product. Losses can also happen during the isolation and purification of the product, such as during filtration, evaporation, or recrystallization.

Understanding and optimizing reaction yield is crucial in chemical synthesis, particularly in industrial settings, as it directly impacts the cost-effectiveness and sustainability of a process. A high reaction yield means that more of the desired product is obtained from the starting materials, reducing waste and resource consumption. Conversely, a low yield can indicate inefficiencies in the reaction or purification process, prompting chemists to investigate and modify their methods.
