ReTipping

ReTipping is a term used in discussions of tipping culture to describe the act of giving an additional tip after an initial tip has already been provided. It is most commonly associated with hospitality and digital tipping platforms, where customers may choose to increase a tip in response to ongoing service improvements, issue resolution, or follow-up attention from staff. The concept is not tied to a single formal policy and its usage varies by region, venue, and platform.

Origins and usage are informal. ReTipping emerged in online discussions and industry commentary as a way to acknowledge continued or enhanced service beyond the moment of initial tipping. In practice, it may occur in in-person settings, such as restaurants or hotels, or through digital apps that allow tip top-ups after a service interaction or after a stay is completed.

Mechanisms often involve either immediate post-service top-ups or delayed additions through online platforms. In some cases, re-tipping is prompted by perceived fairness, satisfaction with corrective action, or appreciation for follow-up service that exceeds expectations.

Economic and social implications include potential incentives for ongoing service quality and accountability, as well as complications for wage structures where tips contribute to income. Critics warn that re-tipping may blur expectations about standard service levels or create inequalities if only certain customers engage in the practice.
