Rationalkritisch

Rationalkritisch is a German-language term used to describe an attitude or approach that combines reason with critical scrutiny. It denotes a stance that foregrounds evidence, logical argument, and a readiness to revise one's beliefs in light of new information. In practice, rationalkritisch thinking aims to avoid dogmatism and unsupported claims, preferring open discussion and public justification of positions.

Although the term can be linked to the broader tradition of critical rationalism in philosophy, in everyday use rationalkritisch does not refer to a single closed school. It is a descriptive label for approaches that apply rational analysis and critical testing to claims in science, politics, education, media, and public life.

Key features include fallibilism (accepting that knowledge could be mistaken), reliance on evidence and falsifiability where applicable, avoidance of ad hoc defenses, openness to revision, and a commitment to constructive dialogue. It also often implies evaluating arguments on their merits rather than on authority, status, or rhetoric.

In German discourse, rationalkritisch is used to advocate for science-based policy, media literacy, and educational practices that teach students to assess sources, identify biases, and distinguish evidence from opinion. Critics warn that the term can be vague or used as a catchword, and that rational critique must be balanced with ethical considerations and empathy.
