Rasvapatjadele, often referred to as fat pads, are localized collections of adipose tissue found throughout the body. These pads serve multiple functions, including cushioning and protecting underlying structures, insulating the body, and acting as a storage site for energy in the form of fat. Their distribution is not uniform, and they are particularly prominent in certain areas.

In the face, fat pads contribute to facial contours and provide volume. Prominent examples include the buccal fat pad, located in the cheeks, and the infraorbital fat pads beneath the eyes. These pads can change with age, leading to a loss of facial volume or the appearance of sagging.

In the extremities, fat pads are crucial for shock absorption. The heel fat pad, for instance, is a specialized structure that cushions the heel bone during walking and running. Similar fat pads are found in the soles of the feet and around joints like the elbow and knee, providing protection and smooth movement.

Fat pads also play a role in body shape and thermoregulation. Subcutaneous fat, the layer directly beneath the skin, is essentially a widespread fat pad that helps retain body heat. Regional fat deposits, such as those in the abdomen and hips, are also considered fat pads, storing energy reserves. The specific composition and distribution of these fat pads can vary significantly between individuals based on genetics, diet, and lifestyle.
