Rasvaliitteitä, also known as fatty deposits or lipomas, are benign tumors made of fat tissue. They are very common and can occur anywhere on the body, though they are most often found on the trunk, neck, arms, and thighs. They typically present as soft, movable lumps just under the skin.

The exact cause of lipomas is not fully understood, but they are thought to have a genetic component, as they can run in families. They can also be associated with certain medical conditions such as Gardner syndrome, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, and obesity. Lipomas are generally painless and do not cause any health problems, although they can sometimes press on nerves and cause discomfort or pain.

Diagnosis is usually made through a physical examination. In some cases, imaging tests like ultrasound or MRI may be used to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other conditions. Treatment is not always necessary unless the lipoma is causing pain, is growing rapidly, or is considered cosmetically undesirable.

If treatment is desired, the lipoma can be surgically removed. This is a common and straightforward procedure. Liposuction can also be used to remove smaller lipomas. In rare instances, lipomas can recur after removal, but this is uncommon. While lipomas are benign, any new lump should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to ensure it is indeed a lipoma and not a more serious condition.
