Rasvahappometyylieesteriä, often abbreviated as FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Ester), is a type of chemical compound derived from fats and oils. It is produced through a process called transesterification, where triglycerides, the main components of fats and oils, react with methanol in the presence of a catalyst. This reaction breaks down the triglycerides into glycerol and fatty acid methyl esters.

FAMEs are known for their biodegradability and relatively low toxicity, making them an attractive alternative to petroleum-based fuels and chemicals. Their properties can vary significantly depending on the type of fatty acids present in the original fat or oil. For example, FAMEs derived from vegetable oils tend to have different properties than those derived from animal fats.

They are used in various industries, including cosmetics, cleaning products, and industrial manufacturing. The specific properties of a FAME, such as its viscosity, cloud point, and cetane number, determine its suitability for different applications.
