Rasvaalkoholi

Rasvaalkoholi, also known as fatty alcohol, is a type of alcohol with a long aliphatic chain. These compounds are derived from fatty acids and are characterized by a hydroxyl group at one end of the hydrocarbon chain. Rasvaalkoholi can be either saturated or unsaturated, depending on the presence of double bonds within the carbon chain. They are typically solid at room temperature and have a waxy consistency.

Industrially, rasvaalkoholi are often produced through the reduction of fatty acids or esters, or through the Ziegler process which involves the oligomerization of ethylene. Natural sources include animal fats and vegetable oils, from which they can be extracted.

The properties of rasvaalkoholi make them valuable in a variety of applications. They are widely used as emulsifiers, emollients, and thickeners in the cosmetic and personal care industries, appearing in products like lotions, creams, and shampoos. In the detergent industry, they serve as precursors for the synthesis of surfactants, which are key components in cleaning agents. Additionally, rasvaalkoholi find use in the production of lubricants, plasticizers, and various specialty chemicals. Their amphiphilic nature, possessing both a hydrophobic hydrocarbon tail and a hydrophilic hydroxyl head, allows them to interact with both oil and water, facilitating their diverse industrial roles.
