Rasterformaatti

Rasterformaatti, also known as bitmap graphics, is a digital image representation that uses a grid of individual pixels to form an image. Each pixel is assigned a specific color value. The term "raster" refers to this grid-like structure. When an image is displayed or printed, the computer or device interprets the pixel data and renders it accordingly. The resolution of a raster image is determined by the number of pixels it contains, often expressed as width and height in pixels. A higher resolution generally means more detail and a sharper image.

Raster formats are widely used for photographs, digital art, and scanned images. Common examples of raster file formats include JPEG, PNG, GIF, and BMP. The advantage of raster graphics is their ability to represent complex color gradients and textures found in real-world images. However, raster images can lose quality when scaled up, as the individual pixels become larger and more noticeable, leading to a pixelated appearance. Editing raster images often involves manipulating these individual pixels or groups of pixels. File sizes for raster images can be substantial, especially for high-resolution or complex images, although various compression techniques are employed to reduce them.
