Rankdenoting is a linguistic concept describing elements whose primary function is to denote rank within a social, institutional, or organizational hierarchy. The term rankdenoting combines rank with denoting and is not universally standardized in dictionaries, but it is used in some sociolinguistic discussions to group expressions that encode status or position.

Rankdenoting expressions can take several forms. They include honorifics and titles such as Sir, Your Grace, Duke, Professor; rank-descriptive modifiers like senior and junior; and explicit rank terms found in organizations or professions, such as Captain, Major, Director, or Chief. They may appear pre-nominally or post-nominally, and their usage often affects formality, politeness, and the dynamics of interaction. In many languages, rankdenoting forms are tied to social norms around authority, age, gender, and social distance, and they may vary significantly across cultures.

Linguistic study of rankdenoting items examines how they index power, hierarchy, and stance, as well as how speakers choose among alternatives to signal respect or familiarity. They also interact with broader systems of address and politeness, sometimes overriding or reinforcing social rules in discourse. Cross-linguistic variation means some languages rely heavily on explicit titles, while others use pronouns, kinship terms, or non-verbal cues to convey rank.
