Randonneuring

Randonneuring is a style of long-distance cycling that originated in France in the late 19th century. It involves riding a bicycle over long distances, typically exceeding 50 kilometers, on a predetermined course that can be rural or urban. Randonneurs, as participants are called, typically ride alone or in small groups, relying on their own strength and endurance to complete the course.

Randonneuring events, known as brevets, are typically scheduled for early morning and late afternoon, allowing participants to enjoy scenic routes and avoid peak traffic hours. Brevets often require riders to complete a series of checkpoints, or controle points, where their time is recorded, and their bike is inspected to ensure it meets the necessary standards. These checks help to ensure that riders have completed the required distance, finished within the allowed time limits, and are complying with safety regulations.

Randonneuring is considered a more relaxed and recreational form of long-distance cycling compared to competitive events such as time trials and asphalt ultra-distance cycling. Randonneurs may choose to ride a road bike or a touring bike, and some may carry basic supplies, such as a first aid kit, a water bottle, and a spare tire, while others may choose to be fully self-supported, carrying all their gear with them.

Randonneuring has become popular worldwide, with events such as the Paris-Brest-Paris and the Tour de Province taking place annually. It is also recognized by international governing bodies, such as Audax UK and the United States Audax Association, which provide guidelines and standards for randonneuring events and riders.
