Audax

Audax is a term derived from the Latin audax, meaning bold or daring. In English and many other languages, the word is used to evoke boldness or fearless action.

In endurance cycling, audax denotes a style of long-distance, self-supported rides conducted under a brevet or randonnée format. Courses are predefined and proof of passage is collected at control points; riders must finish within prescribed time limits. Distances commonly range from about 200 to 1200 kilometers, and events emphasize navigation, pacing, and self-reliance rather than external support.

The audax cycling movement originated in France in the early 20th century. It is administered internationally by Audax Club Mondial (ACM), with national organizations such as Audax Club Parisien (ACP) coordinating events. In some countries the discipline is also known as randonneuring; the terms are often used interchangeably in practice.

Beyond cycling, audax appears as a Latin epithet and as part of various organizational or brand names. The word retains its association with boldness in general usage and is used in literature, design, and marketing to convey daring.
