Randomizedization

Randomizedization, also referred to as random assignment, is a process used in scientific research to allocate participants or experimental units to different treatment groups by chance rather than by choice. The technique eliminates bias, ensuring that each group is statistically comparable and that any observed effects can be attributed to the treatment itself rather than to pre-existing differences among participants.

In clinical trials, randomizedization underpins the validity of comparative studies. Participants are typically assigned using computer-generated random numbers, random number tables, or sealed envelopes containing group allocations. Stratified randomization further ensures balance across key covariates such as age or disease severity by grouping participants before random assignment. Block randomization maintains equal group sizes throughout the enrolment period, while adaptive randomization adjusts allocation probabilities in response to accumulating data.

Beyond medical research, randomizedization is employed in agricultural experiments, psychology studies, and social science interventions to control for confounding variables. It is a foundational element of the scientific method, providing a counterfactual framework that supports causal inference.

Ethical considerations arise with randomization, particularly when a potentially superior treatment is withheld from some participants. Institutional review boards review designs to balance scientific rigor with participant welfare, often allowing placebo controls only when no proven therapy exists.

Statistical analysis following randomization typically involves intention-to-treat principles, preserving the initial allocation throughout analysis even if participants deviate from the protocol.
